Roy H. Whitmire

Roy H. Whitmire, 95 of Chattanooga, passed into the presence of the Lord on Sunday, August 18, 2019.

He was born on July 16, 1924 in Chattanooga to the late Charles Andrew and Bertha Frost Whitmire.  Mr. Whitmire was a U.S. Army WWII veteran, having served with the 112th Combat Engineers European Theater of Operations.  Roy was married for 73 years to the late Burma Millican Whitmire, who died in 2016. 

He was a professional educator for 41 years, having served 24 of those years as the Principal of Westview Elementary School and seven years as the Director of Elementary Education for Hamilton County.  Roy also served on the Board of Education and he initiated the “Spelling Bee” program for Hamilton County.  He was named Educator of the Year in 1987.

His greatest joys were his Lord, family, country and the students and teachers he was privileged to guide.  Roy was a member of Concord Baptist Church and a true patriot.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Barbara Ogle, Doris Caves, Lee Whitmire and Laura Stuart.

Survivors include his daughters, Royce (Bill) Hampton and Lynne (Mike) Cory; grandchildren, Matthew Hampton, Sarah Lane, Martha Ward, Anna Evans, Hannah Bryan, Bethany Allison, Jeremiah Cory and 12 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 AM Wednesday, August 21, at the Chattanooga National Cemetery with Rev. David King officiating.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Hearth Hospice, especially Isaac and Travis, and the Life Care of Ooltewah staff for their love, kindness and care of “Papaw”.
