Tribute

Betty Mealus died on January 2nd , 2022 at her home, under the care of her family and Hospice of Chattanooga. She was born in Carthage, NY on December 11, 1947, to James and Rose (Perkins) McKenna. She was a 1965 graduate of Augustinian Academy (Carthage, NY) and received her dental hygienist license from Monroe Community College, Rochester, NY in 1969. She was married to Peter Mealus a hometown boy on May 13th, 1972.

Betty’s calling was as a wife and mother. Her compassionate and caring spirit allowed her to develop the closest of friends no matter where she called home at the time. Her sensitivity to others, allowed her to form strong bonds and caring relationships wherever she was, at church, the sports barn, soccer/track mom or in the grocery line. She took great delight in her family, friends and in her local church. She always found an area of service to others from Sunday school to sports mom, as a volunteer bus driver for the kid’s Christian school, or as a confidant. Betty loved her country and lived in 7 different states during Pete’s working career. The couple settled in Chattanooga in 1997, and except for a 2-year hiatus to Mooresville, NC, she spent the rest of her life here in Chattanooga. She was a member of City Church, involved in the ministries Tres Dias, Cleansing Stream and Kairos/Step Up prison ministries in service to others and was a prayer warrior through-out her life.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years Pete at home; daughter, Kristen, Chattanooga; son, Scott Charlotte, NC; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She also has 7 siblings, James (Nalani) McKenna, Trumansburg, NY, Dennis (Peggy) McKenna, Norwich, NY, David (Beverley) McKenna, Carrolton, GA, Danny (Michele) McKenna, Waxhaw, NC, Sharon (Glenn) Steffy, Lakeland, FL, Timothy (Bobbi) McKenna, Lakeland, FL, and Bonnie (Rick) Phillips, Lakeland, FL.

Burial will be at the National Cemetery in Chattanooga. There will be a celebration of life service at City Church, 7122 Lee Highway on Jan. 22nd at 2:00 P.M. officiating by Pastor Chapman. There will be a light buffet reception after the service at the church for a time of remembering with family and friends.
